Chuck Close, self portrait
Chuck Close, born in 1940, suffered a stroke in 1988 that left him completely paralysed from the neck down initially. He recovered some motor control but has painted with a brush in his mouth from then on & is still exploring his technique, based on the grid, today. The painting to the right, a portrait titled: Lucas, is- 91.4 x 76.2 cm (36 x 30 in). The one below (255 x 210 cm-102 x 84 inches) was painted after his stroke- in 1997.
