Paul Edmund Herman, PhD is a fine artist, muralist, and sculptor whose career spans decades of classical training and global output. His practice encompasses figurative oil portraits, marble and kinetic sculpture, architectural trompe l’œil, and historical technique copies.

Early Life & Background

Born in Los Angeles in 1962 to artist parents Victor Herman (painter) and Joni Di Pirro (painter & restorer of antique paintings), Paul was raised immersed in fine art. His childhood included living in Morocco, Sicily, Malta, and Florence, Italy. By age sixteen, he was drawing portraits in London’s Piccadilly Circus before formally studying art in London and New York.

He completed his doctorate at the University of Sevilla, Spain, writing a practical and theoretical dissertation on Rembrandt’s materials and techniques. Following years of travel and work across Europe, Asia, and North America, he established a career grounded in technical mastery and continuous production.

“I have always tried to paint what I see simply and honestly, but, as I grow older, I notice I always make the same mistakes. And so, have decided that is my style.”

Approach & Work

Whether executing a full-scale ceiling mural, a family portrait, or kinetic, interactive sculptures built with carving, assemblage, wooden mechanisms, and polychromy, Herman combines traditional Renaissance and Baroque techniques with contemporary expressionism.
