Portrait: Oil on canvas. Raymond, homeless in L.A. 68cm x 40cm (27in x 16in) I picked Ray up one day on the street where he was panhandling, I offered him 5 bucks an hour to come to my studio & sit for the portrait. He was very keen (& a nice guy) but the comfort of my studio compared to the hours in full sunlight wandering from here to there looking for hand-outs would put him to sleep shortly after he sat down. When I would call his name to wake him he would sit blot upright & open his eyes wide trying to force the sleepiness away & I would have to pretend I was painting while I waited for him to relax & then paint a few hurried strokes before he again fell asleep! The painting took a quite a few sessions & when I was finished for the day I would leave the studio, & Ray, to sleep an hour or so before waking him with coffee.
